Review of “He / She / They” written by Schuyler Bailar
I often turn off my social media as it’s so tiring, frustrating and sad witnessing all the anti-trans rhetoric that is so common place. It is so refreshing to read a book that is well researched and relatable while simultaneously dismantling this negative echo chamber.
Schuyler offers their experience coming out as trans and the challenges he has faced. This provides ebbing, contextual examples used to unpack the many crushing, anti-trans, sexist, racist and homophobic viewpoints he’s had to confront on his journey.
Schuyler effectively debunks and offers intelligent strategies to use when confronted by uneducated and potentially damaging viewpoints. He also is very honest from his perspective, even reflecting on his own mistakes that have undermined a demographic.
It is so important to have books like these that provide a positive discourse in a sea of confusing and mixed messages. The intersectionality of the queer community is also illustrated and celebrated in Schuyler’s book which is paramount to breaking down white, patriarchal stereotypes.
I would recommend this book to anyone. It will make you a better ally. It will help you to feel more proud as a trans person and moreover give you a more educated perspective of trans people in sports and wider society.
